Name the ninth Tirthankara of Jainism.
Answer
Pushpadanta
Answer
Pushpadanta
The ninth Tirthankara of Jainism is Pushpadanta, also known as Suvidhinatha.
Jain tradition counts Pushpadanta as the ninth of the 24 Tirthankaras of the present descending time cycle, or avasarpini. Tirthankaras are revered teachers who rediscover and teach the path to liberation. Pushpadanta is said to have been born at Kakandi, identified with modern Khukhundoo in Uttar Pradesh, to King Sugriva and Queen Rama of the Ikshvaku dynasty.
His traditional emblem is the crocodile, sometimes rendered as an alligator or makara. This symbol helps distinguish him from nearby figures in the sequence: Chandraprabha is the eighth Tirthankara, while Shitalanatha is the tenth. Padmaprabha, another distractor in this quiz, is sixth.
Jain accounts say Pushpadanta attained liberation at Shikharji. His enormous traditional lifespan and chronology belong to Jain cosmology rather than ordinary historical dating, so they should not be confused with the limited historical evidence available for later figures such as Parshvanatha and Mahavira.
