Name the famous Brutalist housing tower in London designed by Ernő Goldfinger.

The story behind the answer

Name the famous Brutalist housing tower in London designed by Ernő Goldfinger: Trellick Tower.

Trellick Tower stands in Kensal Town, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, and was designed by Hungarian-born British architect Ernő Goldfinger. Construction began in 1968, and the tower opened on 28 June 1972 as part of a council housing project intended to replace substandard Victorian housing.

The building was influenced by Goldfinger’s earlier Balfron Tower in Poplar. Its tall residential slab is linked to a separate access tower containing lifts and services, a distinctive arrangement that helps give Trellick Tower its recognizable profile. The complex also included shops and other community facilities.

Trellick Tower initially acquired a poor reputation amid crime, vandalism and neglect, but residents’ organisation and improved security helped transform its fortunes. It was Grade II* listed in 1998 and is now one of London’s best-known Brutalist landmarks.

The main mix-up is with Balfron Tower, which Goldfinger also designed. Balfron is another major Goldfinger building, but the London tower named in this question is Trellick Tower.
