Name the 22nd Tirthankara.

The story behind the answer

Neminatha, also known as Nemi or Arishtanemi, is the 22nd Tirthankara of Jainism’s current time cycle.

Jain tradition identifies Neminatha as the son of King Samudravijaya and Queen Shivadevi of the Yadu lineage. He is associated with Sauripura, sometimes connected with Dvaraka, and is traditionally described as a cousin of Krishna and Balarama. His emblem is the conch, while his liberation is associated with Girnar Hill in present-day Gujarat.

One of the best-known stories about Neminatha concerns his renunciation. On the way to his wedding, he heard animals crying after being gathered for the marriage feast. Deeply moved, he ordered them released and abandoned worldly life instead. This episode has made him an especially powerful figure in Jain discussions of compassion and nonviolence.

Neminatha stands immediately before Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara, in the traditional sequence. He should not be confused with Naminatha, the 21st Tirthankara; the names are similar, but they refer to different figures.
