Most pairs of jeans come with five pockets. The classic five-pocket design has two front pockets, two rear pockets, and a small extra pocket sewn inside one of the front pockets.

That tiny pocket was originally intended for a pocket watch, which is why it is often called a watch pocket. Today, “coin pocket” is more common because people typically use it for coins, keys, or other small items. Rivets were added to strengthen the pocket corners for hard-working wearers such as miners and laborers.

A common mix-up is which pocket counts as the “fifth.” In modern jeans, people usually point to the small pocket as the distinctive fifth pocket. Historically, however, early designs changed as pockets were added, and the terminology can vary by brand or denim specialist. Some jeans also omit the small pocket, add extra compartments, or use different pocket layouts, so “most pairs” is more accurate than “all pairs.”

The five-pocket style became an industry-standard shape through classic workwear designs, especially Levi Strauss & Co.’s riveted jeans. The layout remains recognizable even when the denim color, cut, rise, stitching, or decorative details change.
