Lake Enriquillo, the Caribbean's largest lake, is in which country?

The story behind the answer

Lake Enriquillo, the Caribbean’s largest lake, is in the Dominican Republic.

The hypersaline lake lies in southwestern Dominican Republic, in the Hoya de Enriquillo depression near the border with Haiti. It is the largest lake on both Hispaniola and the entire Caribbean, and its surface lies about 46 meters below sea level—the lowest point in an island country.

Lake Enriquillo has no outlet; water leaves primarily through evaporation. Its salinity can range from roughly seawater levels to more than 100 parts per thousand. The lake is famous for American crocodiles, flamingos, and endemic iguanas, especially around Isla Cabritos.

A common mistake is choosing Haiti because the lake sits close to the border and the surrounding depression extends toward Haiti. The lake itself is wholly in the Dominican Republic. It is named for Enriquillo, a Taíno cacique who led a rebellion against Spanish rule in the early sixteenth century.
