Koror is the largest city of which Oceanian country?
Answer
Palau
Answer
Palau
Koror is the largest city of the Oceanian country of Palau.
Koror stands on Koror Island, also called Oreor Island, in the western Pacific. It is Palau’s commercial centre and remains its largest urban settlement, even though the national capital was moved to Ngerulmud on Babeldaob in 2006. That move often causes quiz-takers to confuse the capital with the largest city.
Koror grew substantially during the period of Japanese administration. It became the administrative centre of Japan’s South Seas Mandate after World War I, expanding from a village into a regional centre of governance and trade. The city was damaged during World War II, but later developed into Palau’s main service and tourism hub.
Koror is also the gateway to Palau’s celebrated marine attractions, including the Rock Islands and nearby diving sites. “Micronesia” is a frequent wrong answer because Palau belongs to the Micronesian region, but Micronesia is also commonly used for the separate country officially called the Federated States of Micronesia.
