Italy's Amalfi Drive is officially which state highway?
Answer
SS 163
Answer
SS 163
Italy’s Amalfi Drive is officially state highway SS 163, or Strada statale 163 Amalfitana.
The road runs along the Amalfi Coast in Campania, linking the Sorrento area with Amalfi. Much of it is carved directly into steep coastal cliffs above the Tyrrhenian Sea, producing the narrow lanes, sharp bends, and dramatic views associated with the drive.
SS 163 was established in 1953 and is about 50.36 kilometers long. Its route passes through or near famous coastal settlements including Positano, Praiano, and Amalfi. The road is distinct from the broader coastal journey between Salerno and Sorrento, which can involve additional roads beyond the officially designated SS 163.
The number is easy to confuse with SS 1, the Via Aurelia, a much longer Italian state highway. SS 309 and SS 38 are also unrelated routes in other parts of Italy. “Amalfi Drive” is the familiar tourism name; SS 163 is the formal road designation.
