Into which river were Joan of Arc’s ashes thrown after her execution?
Answer
Seine River
Answer
Seine River
Joan of Arc’s ashes were thrown into the Seine River after her execution in Rouen.
Joan was burned at the stake on 30 May 1431. According to accounts of the execution, officials ensured that her body was burned repeatedly so that no physical remains could be collected and displayed as relics.
After the burning, the remaining ashes and fragments were gathered and cast into the Seine from Rouen. This is why no securely authenticated complete burial place exists for Joan’s body.
Later claims about relics have included a jar preserved at Chinon, but modern testing has identified the material as Egyptian mummy remains rather than Joan’s body. The Seine detail therefore forms part of the historical record about the disposal of her remains, not a surviving tomb tradition.
