In You Only Live Twice, the Toyota sports car adapted for Aki and Bond is the Toyota 2000GT.
The car appears during the Japanese sequences and is especially notable because the film uses two open-top versions. Toyota built these special cars for the production after Sean Connery’s height made the standard fixed-roof cabin impractical for filming.
The 2000GT was introduced in the 1960s as Japan’s first internationally recognized grand touring sports car. Its styling was developed with assistance from Yamaha, and its engineering gave Toyota a strong image boost in overseas markets.
People sometimes mistake the film cars for ordinary convertibles. They were purpose-built roadsters created specifically for the production, and Toyota did not offer a normal production convertible version of the 2000GT. The cars are now among the most famous movie vehicles in automotive history.
