In which year was the Assassin's Creed film starring Michael Fassbender released?

The story behind the answer

The Assassin's Creed film starring Michael Fassbender was released in 2016.

Directed by Justin Kurzel, the film premiered in December 2016. Fassbender plays Callum Lynch in the modern-day storyline and Aguilar de Nerha, his fifteenth-century Spanish ancestor, in the historical sequences accessed through the Animus.

The film is set partly during the Spanish Inquisition and uses original characters rather than directly adapting the plot of one particular game. Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Michael K. Williams, and Ariane Labed also appear in the cast. It was the first major live-action theatrical film based on the video-game franchise.
