In which year was Mahatma Gandhi born?
Answer
1869
Answer
1869
Mahatma Gandhi was born in 1869.
He was born on 2 October 1869 in Porbandar, a coastal town in the princely state of Kathiawar, then part of British India. His birth name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. “Mahatma,” meaning “great soul,” became a widely used honorific rather than his original name.
Gandhi’s father, Karamchand Gandhi, served as a senior official in several princely states, while his mother, Putlibai, strongly influenced his religious and ethical outlook. Gandhi later studied law in London before working in South Africa, where his methods of nonviolent resistance developed.
India commemorates his birthday on 2 October as Gandhi Jayanti. The United Nations also observes 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi died in 1948, so his life spanned the late nineteenth-century colonial period and the first year after India’s independence.
