In which year was Emily Brontë born?

The story behind the answer

Emily Brontë was born in 1818.

Emily Jane Brontë was born on 30 July 1818 in Thornton, Yorkshire, to Patrick Brontë and Maria Branwell Brontë. She was the fifth of six children, following Maria, Elizabeth, Charlotte, and Branwell; her younger sister Anne was born in 1820. Soon after Anne’s birth, the family moved to Haworth, where Patrick became perpetual curate.

Emily spent most of her life in the Haworth parsonage and became known for her intense poetry and her only novel, Wuthering Heights. That novel was published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, alongside Anne’s Agnes Grey. Emily, Charlotte, and Anne had earlier published a joint poetry collection in 1846 using the names Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell.

A common mix-up is to assign Emily Charlotte’s birth year, 1816, or Anne’s, 1820. Emily was older than Anne but younger than Charlotte, who was born in 1816. Emily died in 1848, only about a year after Wuthering Heights appeared, but her novel later became one of the most celebrated works in English literature.
