In which year is the main story of Assassin's Creed III set at its beginning?

The story behind the answer

The main story of Assassin's Creed III begins in 1754.

The game opens with Haytham Kenway in London before shifting to the American colonies. Haytham's early chapters establish the colonial Templar perspective and lead into the later story of his son, Ratonhnhaké:ton, also known as Connor. This framing makes the opening date earlier than the best-known Revolutionary War sections.

Connor's portion follows the American Revolution, including events involving Boston, New York, the frontier, and George Washington. The narrative spans several decades and combines fictional Assassin-Templar conflicts with real historical figures and events.

The date is sometimes confused with 1775 or 1776, the years when the revolutionary conflict and Declaration of Independence become central to the story. Assassin's Creed III was released in 2012 and is the fifth major numbered entry, following Assassin's Creed Revelations.
