In which year is Cyberpunk 2077 set?

Cyberpunk 2077 is set in the year 2077.

The story takes place in Night City, a fictional California metropolis shaped by corporate power, advanced technology, organized crime, and severe social inequality. The year is part of the game's title and places its events within the broader timeline of Mike Pondsmith's Cyberpunk universe.

The setting is not meant to depict a simple prediction of one real-world future. It combines influences from cyberpunk fiction with the tabletop setting's established history, including corporate conflicts, technological change, and political upheaval. The game's central Relic storyline unfolds during this future period.

Players sometimes mix up the setting year with the game's release year, 2020, or with the date of the 2013 Cyberpunk 2077 announcement. Those are separate milestones: the fictional events occur in 2077, while the game first launched in 2020.
