The BBC television series Dragons' Den premiered in the United Kingdom in 2005.
The British version began broadcasting on BBC Two in January 2005. It adapted a Japanese business-pitch format in which entrepreneurs present companies or products to wealthy investors and seek money in return for an ownership stake.
The programme quickly became known for its deliberately tense presentation style. Entrepreneurs stand before a panel of investors, answer questions about sales, costs and valuation, and may receive an offer if a Dragon sees commercial potential. The final deal can still depend on later due diligence.
The 2005 premiere is distinct from the programme’s international expansion. Many countries subsequently produced their own versions, while the United States adaptation became known as Shark Tank. The UK show has changed its panel over time, but its central pitch-and-investment structure has remained consistent.
