McDonald’s opened its first McCafé in 1993, creating a new branded coffee concept.
The first McCafé opened in Melbourne, Australia. It was developed as a café-style extension of the McDonald’s brand, with espresso-based drinks and a more specialized coffee presentation than the company’s traditional restaurant service.
McCafé gave McDonald’s a distinct sub-brand that could respond to the growing popularity of café culture. The concept later spread to many countries, although the menu, store design, and rollout timing differed by market. In some locations, McCafé operated as a separate café area inside an existing restaurant; in others, it received stronger standalone visual treatment.
The name is sometimes confused with McDonald’s ordinary coffee offerings. McCafé refers specifically to the branded coffee concept and its associated identity, not simply to every cup of coffee sold by the company. Its launch also preceded McDonald’s later emphasis on premium beverages in many markets.
