McDonald’s launched its first restaurant in Japan in 1971, marking a major step in its Asian branding expansion.
The first Japanese location opened in Tokyo’s Ginza district. McDonald’s entered the market through a partnership involving Den Fujita and adapted its operations and menu presentation for Japanese customers while preserving recognizable elements such as the name, arches, and restaurant format.
Japan is sometimes confused with Canada because Canada was the first country outside the United States to receive a McDonald’s restaurant. Japan’s 1971 opening was instead significant because it established the brand in one of Asia’s most important commercial markets.
