In which year did J.K. Rowling publish The Cuckoo’s Calling?

The story behind the answer

J.K. Rowling published The Cuckoo’s Calling in 2013 under the name Robert Galbraith.

The novel is a crime mystery featuring private investigator Cormoran Strike. Strike investigates the death of model Lula Landry, while Robin Ellacott begins working as his temporary secretary. The book established the characters and investigative style of the later Strike series.

The novel first appeared with Rowling’s authorship concealed. After her identity became known, sales increased dramatically and the book was reissued with Rowling identified as the author behind the pseudonym.

The Cuckoo’s Calling marked a major change from Rowling’s previous fiction. Instead of young-adult fantasy, it presented a contemporary detective story with adult characters, London locations, and a detailed criminal investigation.
