Elton John received his first Academy Award in 1995.
He won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Can You Feel the Love Tonight,” written with lyricist Tim Rice for Disney’s animated film The Lion King. The award was presented at the 67th Academy Awards ceremony, held on 27 March 1995.
The song was performed in the film by a combination of character voices and Elton John’s end-credit recording. John and Rice had already earned major recognition for their work on The Lion King, including a Golden Globe for the same song. John later won another Academy Award for the song “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from Rocketman, but that second win occurred in 2020.
