In which year did C.S. Lewis say he became a Christian?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis said he became a Christian in 1931.

Lewis’s return to Christianity followed years of intellectual and personal change. He had abandoned Christianity during adolescence, but conversations with J.R.R. Tolkien, Hugo Dyson, and other friends helped him reconsider Christian belief. Lewis described himself as becoming a theist in 1929 and returning to Christianity in 1931.

In Surprised by Joy, Lewis famously described his conversion as occurring during a journey to Whipsnade Zoo, writing that he was “kicking and struggling” against God. His account is personal and retrospective rather than a simple public event with one official ceremony.

Lewis later became one of the most widely read Christian apologists of the twentieth century. Works such as Mere Christianity, The Problem of Pain, and The Screwtape Letters grew from this renewed faith. Some readers confuse 1929, the year he accepted theism, with 1931, the year he identified his return to Christianity.
