C.S. Lewis published The Last Battle in 1956. It is the seventh and final novel in The Chronicles of Narnia and brings the series’ fictional history to its climactic conclusion.
The story takes place during the final conflict affecting Narnia and includes King Tirian, the last king of Narnia. It also revisits several ideas that run through the series, including loyalty, deception, judgment, and the contrast between an authentic reality and its false imitation.
The Last Battle won the Carnegie Medal in 1957, one of the major British children’s book prizes. Readers sometimes date the entire Narnia series to 1954 because that was the year Lewis completed writing the seven books, but the final volume was published in 1956.
