In which year did C.S. Lewis die, the same year he retired from Cambridge?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis died in 1963, the year he retired from his Cambridge professorship. He died at his home, The Kilns, near Oxford, on 22 November 1963, aged 64.

Lewis had held the Cambridge chair of Medieval and Renaissance English since 1954. His health had declined, and he formally retired from the position in 1963. Despite his illness, he continued to write and correspond during his final period.

His death date coincided with the deaths of two other major twentieth-century figures: U.S. President John F. Kennedy and writer Aldous Huxley. The coincidence sometimes causes confusion about the date, but Lewis’s death was recorded as 22 November 1963.

Lewis was buried in the churchyard of Holy Trinity Church, Headington Quarry, Oxford. His grave is marked with a quotation from Shakespeare’s King Lear, and The Kilns later became a place associated with Lewis scholarship and remembrance.
