In which year did C.S. Lewis become a Christian after years as an atheist?

The story behind the answer

C.S. Lewis became a Christian in 1931 after years as an atheist.

Lewis’s conversion was gradual rather than the result of one isolated event. He had returned to belief in God by 1930, and in 1931 he embraced Christianity. His conversations with J.R.R. Tolkien and Hugo Dyson were important influences during this period, especially their discussions of myth, imagination, and Christian belief.

Lewis later described himself as having been brought “kicking and screaming” into Christianity, a phrase that captures his sense that the change was intellectually and personally resisted. He became one of the twentieth century’s best-known Christian writers.

The year 1931 is sometimes confused with 1929, when Lewis came to believe in God, or with 1930, another important stage in his spiritual development. Those earlier changes belong to the process; 1931 is the commonly cited year of his conversion to Christianity.
