In which Wisconsin community was Georgia O’Keeffe born?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O’Keeffe was born near Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

Sun Prairie was a farming community northeast of Madison, and O’Keeffe’s childhood began on a dairy farm in the surrounding countryside. The family’s rural setting gave her early experience with fields, plants, sky, and changing light.

O’Keeffe was not born in New Mexico, although that state became closely associated with her mature career. She first visited New Mexico in 1917 and later made the region a major home and subject of her work.

Her Wisconsin birthplace is also distinct from the places where she studied. She attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later the Art Students League in New York before developing her independent artistic style.
