In which Virginia city is Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. headquartered?

The story behind the answer

Hilton Worldwide Holdings Inc. is headquartered in McLean, Virginia.

McLean is an unincorporated community in Fairfax County, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C. Hilton’s corporate offices are located there, even though the company’s hotels operate in destinations around the world. Because McLean is part of the Washington metropolitan area, some descriptions loosely associate the headquarters with Washington, D.C., but the corporate location is in Virginia.

Conrad Hilton founded the hotel company in 1919 when he purchased a hotel in Cisco, Texas. Hilton expanded from a regional hotel business into an international hospitality group with brands such as Hilton Hotels & Resorts, Waldorf Astoria, Conrad, DoubleTree, and Hampton.

The company was formerly known as Hilton Hotels Corporation and adopted the name Hilton Worldwide after a corporate reorganization. McLean is also known for major organizations and government-related institutions, but it is distinct from nearby Arlington and Alexandria.
