In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe spend her final years before dying in 1986?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe spent her final years in New Mexico before dying there in 1986.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly before making the state her principal home after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946. Its cliffs, bones, adobe buildings, and broad desert spaces became central subjects in her art.

She lived and worked in the Abiquiú area and later in Santa Fe. In advanced age, declining eyesight limited her ability to paint, but she continued working with assistants and explored other forms, including pottery.

O'Keeffe died in Santa Fe on March 6, 1986, at age 98. New Mexico is sometimes called the setting of her entire career, but she also spent important periods in Wisconsin, Chicago, New York, Texas, and Hawaii.
