Who was Georgia O'Keeffe's husband and a leading American photographer?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Georgia O'Keeffe's husband was Alfred Stieglitz.
Stieglitz was an influential American photographer, gallery owner, and advocate for modern art. He first encountered O'Keeffe's abstract drawings through the photographer and art promoter Anita Pollitzer, who showed them to him in 1916.
Stieglitz organized O'Keeffe's first solo exhibition in 1917 and photographed her extensively over many years. Their relationship became both personal and professionally important, although O'Keeffe eventually developed an independent reputation that did not depend on his promotion.
They married in 1924. Stieglitz died in 1946, and O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico three years later. Stieglitz's photographs of O'Keeffe are themselves a major part of the history of American photography.
