In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe spend her final decades?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe spent her final decades in New Mexico.

She first visited New Mexico in 1929 and returned repeatedly during the following years. The state's stark landscapes, adobe buildings, bones, flowers, and expansive skies became central subjects in her work.

O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949, three years after Alfred Stieglitz died. She lived and worked at Abiquiú and maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú.

New Mexico was not the only place important to her career. She had earlier spent years in New York and visited Lake George, where she painted many works. Arizona, Colorado, and Utah also contain dramatic landscapes, but they were not the state most associated with her later life.
