In which U.S. state did Georgia O'Keeffe settle permanently in 1949?

The story behind the answer

Georgia O'Keeffe settled permanently in New Mexico in 1949.

O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned repeatedly during the 1920s and 1930s. She was drawn to its desert landscapes, adobe buildings, mountains, bones, and intense light, all of which became recurring subjects in her paintings.

After Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946, O'Keeffe moved permanently to New Mexico in 1949. She lived and worked at different times in Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch, and the state remained central to her artistic identity for the rest of her life.

New Mexico is sometimes reduced to a travel setting in accounts of her career, but it was much more important than that. Its forms and colors shaped her visual vocabulary, while her New York years had established her reputation before the move.
