Which U.S. state became Georgia O'Keeffe's best-known landscape subject?
Answer
New Mexico
Answer
New Mexico
New Mexico became Georgia O'Keeffe's best-known landscape subject.
O'Keeffe first visited New Mexico in 1917 and returned regularly after 1929. She was drawn to its cliffs, desert skies, adobe buildings, bones, flowers, and stark geological forms. These subjects became central to the public image of her work.
She lived and worked at several New Mexico locations, including Ghost Ranch and Abiquiú. Her paintings of the region were not conventional travel illustrations: she simplified shapes, enlarged details, and used strong color and carefully arranged composition to create highly distinctive modernist images.
O'Keeffe continued painting New Mexico subjects for decades. Because of that long association, people sometimes overlook her earlier New York skyscrapers, Texas landscapes, Hawaii paintings, and Midwestern beginnings.
