Georgia O'Keeffe painted the Lake George series in New York State.
Lake George was the location of the Stieglitz family’s summer home in the Adirondacks. O'Keeffe spent substantial time there with Alfred Stieglitz and his family, especially during the 1920s and early 1930s.
The series includes landscapes, trees, barns, leaves, flowers, and other subjects observed around the lake. These works show O'Keeffe moving between recognizable natural forms and simplified compositions, a characteristic feature of her modernist practice.
Lake George can be confused with O'Keeffe’s later New Mexico subjects because both bodies of work include landscapes and natural objects. The location, however, was in upstate New York, long before she made New Mexico her permanent home in 1949.
