In which U.S. city did Fugazi form in 1986?
Answer
Washington, D.C.
Answer
Washington, D.C.
Fugazi formed in Washington, D.C., in 1986. The post-hardcore band grew from the city’s influential DIY hardcore network and became known for combining experimental guitar work, political awareness, and independent business practices.
Ian MacKaye began assembling the group after Minor Threat and his later band Embrace had ended. He recruited bassist Joe Lally and drummer Colin Sears, and the trio began practicing in the Washington area in late 1986. Sears soon returned to Dag Nasty and was replaced by Brendan Canty. Guy Picciotto, previously of Rites of Spring, joined shortly afterward.
Fugazi released its first EP in 1988 and later combined that record with “Margin Walker” as “13 Songs.” The band remained closely tied to Dischord Records, the Washington label co-founded by MacKaye and Jeff Nelson, and became internationally influential without adopting conventional major-label practices.
The city is sometimes overlooked because Fugazi’s music reached a global audience. Washington, D.C., is the band’s origin, while Boston, Los Angeles, and New York City were important punk centers but are not the correct answers.
