In which season does the focus shift to the school system?

The focus shifts to the school system in Season 4 of The Wire.

The season follows four Baltimore middle-school students—Michael Lee, Namond Brice, Randy Wagstaff, and Duquan “Dukie” Weems—as they navigate classrooms, family pressures, neighborhood violence, and the drug trade. Their stories show how the school system and the streets influence one another.

Season 4 also introduces former police major Howard “Bunny” Colvin’s attempt to study students considered at risk of entering criminal life. Former detective Roland “Prez” Pryzbylewski becomes a math teacher, giving the season an insider’s view of classroom realities, bureaucratic targets, standardized testing, and institutional failure.

A common mix-up is assuming each season examines only one institution. Season 4 remains connected to the police department, drug organizations, city politics, and the mayoral race, but education is its defining new focus. Season 3 centers more strongly on drug-law experiments and city politics, while Season 5 turns primarily toward the Baltimore Sun and journalism.
