Law & Order: Special Victims Unit became the longest-running U.S. primetime live-action series in its 21st season.
The milestone arrived when Season 21 premiered on September 26, 2019. At that point, SVU surpassed the original Law & Order’s completed 20-season run, making the spin-off the longest-running American primetime drama in television history and the longest-running primetime live-action series in the United States.
SVU began on September 20, 1999, as the first spin-off of Law & Order. Its continued production gave it an unusual advantage over many long-running shows: it remained in uninterrupted production while several other famous series either ended, went on hiatus, or were revived years later.
The wording can cause confusion because the record is tied to the start of Season 21, not the end of that season. It also refers to a U.S. primetime live-action series, rather than every scripted program in every format. Animated shows and series with different classifications are counted separately. The achievement therefore belongs specifically to SVU’s 21st-season milestone.
