In which place was Queen singer Freddie Mercury born?

The story behind the answer

Freddie Mercury was born in Zanzibar, an island territory that is now part of Tanzania.

He was born Farrokh Bulsara on 5 September 1946 at Government Hospital in Stone Town, Zanzibar. His parents, Bomi and Jer Bulsara, were Parsis from the Bombay Presidency of British India, and his father worked for the British Colonial Office.

Mercury spent part of his childhood in Zanzibar before being sent to St. Peter's School near Bombay, now Mumbai, in India. He later moved with his family to Middlesex, England, in 1964, where he studied art and developed his musical career.

A common mix-up is to identify Mercury as London-born because Queen formed in London and he lived there for most of his adult life. His birthplace was Zanzibar, which was then a British protectorate and became independent in 1963 before joining Tanganyika in 1964.
