In 1882, Tesla joined the Continental Edison Company, which was building and installing incandescent-lighting systems. The company operated through several divisions, and Tesla was assigned to Société Electrique Edison in Ivry-sur-Seine, where he worked on installing the local lighting system.

This was practical engineering rather than purely theoretical study. Tesla gained experience with generators, motors, wiring, and the demanding work of putting an electrical system into service.
