In which Oceanian country is the Great Ocean Road located?

The story behind the answer

The Great Ocean Road is located in Australia, along the coast of Victoria in southeastern Australia.

Stretching about 240 kilometres between Torquay and Allansford, the road passes beaches, rainforest, cliffs and the famous Twelve Apostles limestone formations. It is one of Australia’s best-known scenic touring routes and follows sections of the Surf Coast and Shipwreck Coast.

The road was built between 1919 and 1932 largely by returned World War I soldiers. It was planned both to connect isolated coastal communities and to provide employment for veterans. The road is often described as the world’s largest war memorial, because it commemorates soldiers killed in the war.

A common mix-up is confusing the Great Ocean Road with the Great Ocean Walk, a separate 104-kilometre trail that opened in 2004 between Apollo Bay and the Twelve Apostles. The highway itself is in the state of Victoria, not in New Zealand or another Pacific island country.
