Alfred Eisenstaedt's famous V-J Day kiss photograph was taken in Times Square.
The scene occurred in Manhattan on August 14, 1945, as people gathered in anticipation of the announcement that Japan had accepted the Allied surrender terms. Eisenstaedt photographed a sailor in a white uniform kissing a woman in a white outfit amid the dense crowd and traffic of Times Square.
The image was made near the intersection where Broadway and Seventh Avenue converge, just south of 45th Street. The distinctive urban setting helped later researchers identify the precise location. A Walgreens sign and the Chemical Bank and Trust building are visible in the related Navy photograph taken by Victor Jorgensen.
The date is sometimes described as V-J Day, although the formal surrender ceremony did not occur until September 2 aboard USS Missouri. August 14 was the date of public celebrations in the United States after President Harry Truman announced Japan's surrender. Because of time-zone differences, Japan's surrender announcement was broadcast there on August 15.
