New York City
Answer
New York City
The famous V-J Day Times Square photograph was taken in New York City.
Alfred Eisenstaedt photographed the image in Times Square on August 14, 1945, as crowds celebrated news that Japan had agreed to surrender. The picture shows a U.S. Navy sailor kissing a woman dressed in white amid the city’s jubilant crowds.
The photograph appeared in Life magazine and became one of the most recognizable images associated with the end of World War II. The woman was long widely described as a nurse, but she was later identified as dental assistant Greta Zimmer Friedman. She said the sailor grabbed her suddenly during the celebration.
A similar photograph was taken by Navy photographer Victor Jorgensen from a different angle. The two images are often mixed up, but Eisenstaedt’s version is the better-known Life magazine photograph.
