What was the planned Allied landing on Kyushu called in Operation Downfall?
Answer
Operation Olympic
Answer
Operation Olympic
The planned Allied landing on Kyushu was called Operation Olympic.
Operation Olympic was the first stage of Operation Downfall, the proposed invasion of Japan. Allied planners intended to land on southern Kyushu on November 1, 1945, and establish positions for a later advance.
The second stage, Operation Coronet, was planned for Honshu and would have targeted the Tokyo area. Because Japan surrendered in August 1945, neither Olympic nor Coronet took place.
Operation Olympic is sometimes confused with Operation Neptune, the naval and amphibious component of the Normandy invasion in Europe. It is also distinct from Operation Coronet, which was the proposed second phase of the Japan invasion plan.
