Georgia O'Keeffe lived and worked in Abiquiú, New Mexico, from 1949.
She moved permanently to New Mexico after Alfred Stieglitz died in 1946. O'Keeffe had already spent years visiting the state, and its cliffs, bones, adobe buildings, and expansive skies had become central subjects in her work. Abiquiú provided a base close to landscapes she had repeatedly painted.
O'Keeffe acquired and restored a historic adobe house in Abiquiú, which became one of her principal homes. She also maintained a home at Ghost Ranch, north of Abiquiú, and traveled between the two places.
Abiquiú is often confused with Santa Fe because Santa Fe became the location of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and the city where she died. However, the village most directly associated with her long-term New Mexico home and studio is Abiquiú.
