Which artist encouraged Georgia O'Keeffe to move to New York in 1918?
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Answer
Alfred Stieglitz
Alfred Stieglitz encouraged Georgia O'Keeffe to move to New York in 1918.
O'Keeffe had been teaching art in Texas and had previously worked in Virginia and South Carolina when Stieglitz offered her an opportunity to live and work in New York. He arranged for her to stay with his niece and supported her artistic development through his gallery, 291, and later galleries.
The move placed O'Keeffe in the center of the American modernist art world. New York architecture, especially skyscrapers and bridges, soon became a recurring subject, while Stieglitz exhibited and photographed her work.
O'Keeffe’s move was not the same as her later relocation to New Mexico. She first began visiting New Mexico in the 1920s and moved there permanently in 1949, after Stieglitz’s death.
