In which month is the British traditional Midsummer Day observed?

The story behind the answer

British traditional Midsummer Day is observed in June.

Midsummer Day is traditionally June 24, the feast of Saint John the Baptist. In the British calendar, it is one of the quarter days, the four dates historically used for legal, financial, and agricultural arrangements. The other quarter days are Lady Day, Michaelmas, and Christmas Day.

The date does not always match the astronomical summer solstice, which can occur on June 20 or June 21 in the Northern Hemisphere. “Midsummer” in traditional English usage is therefore a calendar and cultural term as well as a seasonal one.

Midsummer Day should also be distinguished from Midsummer Eve, which is the preceding evening, June 23. Many European celebrations focus more heavily on that eve, especially those involving bonfires and Saint John’s customs.
