In which modern country is most of Assassin’s Creed Mirage set?

The story behind the answer

Most of Assassin’s Creed Mirage is set in Iraq, chiefly in ninth-century Baghdad. The game follows Basim Ibn Ishaq as he develops from a street thief into a Hidden One during the Islamic Golden Age.

Baghdad was founded in 762 by the Abbasid caliph Al-Mansur and became a major center of government, learning, trade, and culture. Mirage uses this historical setting to frame Basim’s investigation into a conspiracy involving the Order of the Ancients.

The game also includes Alamut, the mountain headquarters of the Hidden Ones. Although Alamut is historically associated with the Nizari Ismaili state in a later period, Mirage presents it as an early Assassin stronghold within its own fictionalized historical narrative.

Iraq is sometimes confused with Syria because Assassin’s Creed games frequently use Levantine settings such as Damascus and Masyaf. Mirage’s principal city, however, is Baghdad.
