In which Michigan city is General Motors' global headquarters located?

The story behind the answer

General Motors' global headquarters is located in Detroit, Michigan.

General Motors was founded in 1908 by William C. Durant in Flint, Michigan, but its modern corporate identity is closely linked with Detroit. The company moved its headquarters to the Renaissance Center on Detroit's riverfront in 1996, returning its corporate center to the city widely known as the heart of the American automobile industry.

The Renaissance Center is a group of skyscrapers developed along the Detroit River. Its central tower became associated with General Motors and serves as the company's global headquarters. GM has also operated major facilities in other Michigan communities, including Warren and Flint.

Flint is an understandable alternative because GM was founded there and maintained important manufacturing operations there. Lansing is Michigan's capital, while Warren hosts major automotive facilities. The corporate headquarters itself is in Detroit.
