The film Red Road takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, particularly around the Red Road Flats in the city’s Balornock area. Andrea Arnold’s 2006 psychological thriller follows Jackie Morrison, a CCTV operator who spots a man from her past while monitoring the city’s surveillance cameras.

The title comes from the Red Road Flats, a large housing development that became one of Glasgow’s most distinctive landmarks. When the towers were built, they were among the tallest residential buildings in Europe. Their stark architecture and surrounding urban landscape give the film much of its tense, claustrophobic atmosphere.

Red Road was the first film in the planned Advance Party trilogy. The project required the films to be set and shot in Scotland and to reuse characters and actors, while each film was directed by a different first-time feature filmmaker. The movie premiered at Cannes in 2006, where Arnold won the Jury Prize.
