In which language was the inscription on the One Ring written?
Answer
Black Speech
Answer
Black Speech
The inscription on the One Ring was written in the Black Speech of Mordor. Sauron created this harsh language as an attempt to impose a common tongue on his servants and subjects.
The inscription contains two lines from the Ring Verse: “One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them; One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.” It appears only when the Ring is heated, revealing fiery letters that identify it as Sauron’s Ruling Ring.
A frequent confusion concerns script versus language. The words are in the Black Speech, but the writing uses Tengwar, an Elvish writing system. Thus, “Elvish” can describe the script, but not the language of the inscription. Quenya is an Elvish language, and Dwarvish refers to the language Khuzdul; neither is correct here.
Tolkien gave very little Black Speech beyond the Ring inscription. Its deliberately rough, guttural sound reflects both Sauron’s character and the language’s role as a tool of domination.
