Sony Group Corporation is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan.
Sony's headquarters is in Minato, one of Tokyo's special wards. The company began in 1946 as Tokyo Tsushin Kenkyujo, or Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Corporation, founded by Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita. It adopted the Sony name in 1958 as it pursued an international consumer-electronics identity.
Sony grew from radios and televisions into a diversified group spanning games, music, films, cameras, sensors, and financial services. Its headquarters in Tokyo reflects the company's Japanese origin, while Sony maintains major offices and studios across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Kyoto is associated with companies such as Nintendo and Nintendo's historical base, while Osaka and Yokohama are also major Japanese business centers. Those associations can make the city question less obvious, but Sony's corporate headquarters is in Tokyo. The corporate group was renamed Sony Group Corporation in 2021.
