Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Italy.
The company began in the Veneto region, where its early identity was closely linked to leather craftsmanship. Bottega Veneta became particularly associated with intrecciato, a woven leather technique that turns narrow strips of leather into a distinctive, flexible surface.
Vicenza is in northeastern Italy and is different from the larger fashion centers of Milan and Florence. The brand’s name itself means “Venetian shop,” reflecting its regional roots rather than indicating that it was founded in Venice.
Bottega Veneta later expanded beyond its original leather goods into shoes, clothing, jewelry, and other accessories. Its Cabat and other woven bags are strongly associated with the house, but the brand’s foundation in Vicenza predates those specific handbag designs.
