John Lennon held his Montreal bed-in at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel. Lennon and Yoko Ono occupied Room 1742 at the Montreal hotel from May 26 to June 2, 1969, continuing their peaceful protest against war and promoting the message of peace from a hotel bed.

The Montreal event was the second of the couple’s famous bed-ins. Their first took place at Amsterdam’s Hilton Hotel in March 1969. Lennon and Ono chose the Queen Elizabeth Hotel after being refused entry to the United States because of Lennon’s 1968 cannabis conviction. During the Montreal bed-in, visitors, journalists, musicians, and activists gathered in the room, turning the event into a highly publicized piece of performance activism.

The hotel also became important in Beatles history because Lennon and Ono recorded “Give Peace a Chance” there. The recording took place in Room 1742 with musicians and guests joining the chorus. The hotel is now known as Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth, but “Queen Elizabeth Hotel” is the standard historical name used for the 1969 event.
